Sinds de jaren 50 zit de bioëthiek in de lift, in een stroomversnelling. In heel de westerse wereld ontstonden biomedische instituten, congressen volgden elkaar snel op. Nieuwe tijdschriften zagen het licht; ethische commissies op lokaal, regionaal en nationaal vlak werden opgericht. In de stroom van publicaties ontbraken kerkelijke documenten niet. Sinds paus Pius XII heeft de kerkelijke overheid in toenemende mate haar stem laten horen. Rome heeft gesproken; inderdaad. Dit boek inventariseert het kerkelijk spreken in verband met bioëthiek. Een synthese over de rooms katholieke standpunten was niet voorhanden. Dit boek voorziet bijgevolg in een leegte. Maar het gaat om meer. Moet de kerk wel spreken? Bestaat er zoiets als een christelijke/kerkelijke bioëthiek? Wat kan het aandeel van de kerken zijn in het actuele biomedische debat?
